Having successfully engineered the world’s first hydrogen powered race car and winning the inaugural Class 1(A) event at Silverstone in July 2008, UH Racing turned it’s attention to another alternative fuel for 2009. UH12A is a pure electric race car. An astonishing display of engineering earned the team First place overall in the Formula Student Class 1A competition, and additionally the team won the prize for lowest carbon emissions. As a technical exercise the vehicle proved the viability of electric vehicles in both domestic and motorsport use and was beaten in time by only 5 petrol cars in the endurance event at Formula Student UK 2009. Remanufacturing numerous components from past UH Racing vehicles to minimise component costs, the vast majority of budget and time was allocated to developing a complete and reliable electrical powertrain and drivetrain system, that achieved goals of offering high performance in a low weight, environmentally sustainable and safe solution. LiFeBatt cells and high performance Lynch DC Motors offer exceptional efficiency that is magnitudes greater than that of conventional internal combustion engines. Team List: James Major (Team Captain), Chris Thompson (Chassis), Darren Wells(Packaging and Bodywork),Jefferey Joseph (Motor and Control Systems), Adam James (Drivetrain), Steve Hallett(Supervisor), Pete Turner (Energy Storage and Driver Controls), David Lam (Hubs and Braking Systems), Richard Jones(Battery specification) Kostas Ntouvas (Safety and Cooling), David Russell(Electrics), Darren Ellis (Vehicle Performance Simulation)
