With a class win the previous year and winners of the inaugural Formula Student Class 1A event for alternative fuelled cars, the pressure was on! A new team of final year Masters level students were assembled to tackle FS’s toughest class and it’s fair to say the team overcame more hurdles than any other UH Racing team just to get to competition. The team successfully registered for FS, but also Formula Student Electric, the first all electric FS competition held alongside FSG. Building on our successful electric car platform from the previous year, the team went about improving overall vehicle packaging in order to reduce centre of gravity height and to give a more even weight distribution front to rear. An all new battery module was designed and built by the team and a fully removable rear sub-frame allowed removal of the redesigned battery pack. A student designed and built data logger was also implemented to monitor battery condition, motor and speed controller temperatures as well as calculate energy used. Unfortunately the team had poor luck with their previously reliable Lithium iron cells and several pack rebuilds cost the team dear running time meaning the car had very little test mileage under its belt going in to competition. Despite the setbacks with the car, at FS UK the team were rewarded for all of their hard efforts by winning the Sustainability Award and also the Best Business Presentation. Dynamically UH13 performed well in acceleration, skid pad and autocross but the car didn’t have the legs to see it home in the endurance event meaning UH had to let go of their FS Class 1A title to worthy winners ETH Zurich. Sadly our battery pack had seen its last outing and with only 3 weeks to regroup before FSG, the team elected to replace the battery pack with lead acid AGM chemistry and head over to Hockenheim. Never having the lightest car and limited battery capacity meant a more leisurely approach to the dynamic events but the team were proud to compete and show what they could do! Team List: Kit Jones (Team Captain), Matt Sorrell (Powertrain), Rob Turner (Power Train), James Kelly(Chassis), Laurence McLauchlan(Simulation), Chris Priestman (Electronics), Colin Avis(Suspension), Andy Reid (Suspension), Oliver Woodbridge (Cooling) Jamie Harrison(Bodywork),Mike Naylor (Statics), James Nevens (Driver), Antonio Carrozza (Driver), Matthew Grant (Driver),
