UHH2 | CLASS 1A

In 2008 UH Racing proudly presented the World’s first competing hydrogen powered Formula Student Race car. UHH2 was designed to compete in the inaugural IMechE Formula Student Class 1A event for Low Carbon Emission vehicles. Three teams took on the challenge, each coming up with very different solutions. The UHH2 team wowed the design judges with their zero emission powertrain picking up the win in Design. Further success continued on track and the team scooped the Overall winners prize, thus putting themsleves in the history books as first winners of the FS Class 1A event. The car was powered by a hydrogen burning internal combustion engine. A Yamaha WR250F motocross engine was chosen and ran with an Eaton M24 supercharger. The supercharger was driven using a custom designed aluminium v-belt pulley connected to a supercharger driveshaft taking drive from the primary drive within the clutch casing via a bespoke gear. The drive shaft ran in the redundant kick-start journals and was supported by a replacement CNC machined aluminium clutch cover plate. Hydrogen was stored at up to 200 Bar pressure in 2 filament wound high pressure vessels and was injected in to the inlet manifold similar to that found on a regular fuel injected engine. The UHH2 team fully mapped the engine in house and the engine produced 25BHP, the same as a restricted 250cc engine would have, but with only water exiting the exhaust.
